Thumbnails at 1280 × 720
For years 1280 × 720 was the size YouTube asked for, and many creators still design thumbnails at it. YouTube's help page now says to make the thumbnail as large as possible, recommends 3840 × 2160 for videos, and sets the minimum width at 640 pixels with a 16:9 shape. A 1280 × 720 file meets all of that: it is 16:9, twice the minimum width, and as a JPG it stays far below the 2 MB limit for uploads from a phone.
If you work on a 4K screen or want the sharpest possible preview on TVs, make it bigger with the same 16:9 shape, such as 1920 × 1080. For most channels, 1280 × 720 looks clean in search results and on phones.
From a screenshot or a frame
A screenshot from a phone is tall and narrow, and a frame grabbed from a 4K video is 3840 × 2160. Both go to 1280 × 720 here: the 4K frame is scaled down cleanly, while the tall screenshot is trimmed to a 16:9 band from the middle. To keep the whole screenshot, choose Fit the whole picture and design around the bars.
Text on a thumbnail stays sharper as PNG; for photos, JPG is lighter.
Other places 1280 × 720 fits
Blog and news sites often use 16:9 header images around this size, and many presentation and e-learning tools accept 1280 × 720 slides. It loads quickly on mobile data, which matters more than a few extra pixels for most readers.
Frequently asked questions

How do I make a 1280 × 720 image without stretching?
Keep Fill and crop the edges, or choose Fit the whole picture for bars instead of trimming.
