or drop them here · up to 50 MB per file, free

500 × 500 is the minimum, not the goal

eBay asks for at least 500 × 500 pixels and recommends about 1600 × 1600. Mercado Libre's developer documentation sets the same 500 × 500 minimum, says smaller images are not enlarged, recommends 1200 × 1200, and only turns on zoom for images wider than 800 pixels. A 500-pixel photo passes the check but buyers cannot zoom into it.

So use 500 × 500 when it is all you have, for example an old small photo that the site refuses as too small. If your original is bigger, type 1200 or 1600 in both boxes instead. Enlarging a tiny image to 500 makes it pass, but it will look soft.

Borders, and why Mercado Libre trims them

Fit the whole picture keeps the whole item and fills the gaps with white in a JPG, transparent in a PNG. On a white-background product shot that is invisible. On eBay, keep in mind that the picture policy does not allow added borders, so on a coloured background choose Fill and crop the edges.

Mercado Libre's documentation says white borders are removed, leaving a margin of about 10% in total. A 500 × 500 square with wide white bars can therefore end up smaller after its trimming. One more reason to upload a larger image to Mercado Libre.

Avatars, icons and catalogues

Outside marketplaces, 500 × 500 is a handy square for profile pictures, team pages and forum avatars: sharp on a phone and only a few dozen KB as a JPG. For a round avatar, keep the face in the centre of the photo, because sites cut the corners off.

Frequently asked questions

Is 500 × 500 enough for eBay?

It is the minimum eBay accepts. eBay recommends about 1600 × 1600 for better quality.

Why does Mercado Libre say my photo is too small?

It needs at least 500 × 500 px. Resize here, but start from the largest version of the photo you have.

Will my picture be stretched?

No. Fit the whole picture and Fill and crop the edges both keep the proportions; only Stretch to fill distorts.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are resized in your browser on your device.
