Why the whole picture is kept
Stickers and icons are usually a cut-out shape: a face, a logo, a cartoon. Cropping them to a square would cut off hands, ears or letters. So this page starts with Fit the whole picture: the image is scaled until its longer side is 512 pixels and centred, and the empty strips are left transparent on a PNG or WebP. If you prefer a filled square, switch to Fill and crop the edges.
Start from a PNG with a transparent background. A JPG has no transparency, so its empty strips come out white.
WhatsApp stickers
WhatsApp's guide for sticker apps says each sticker must be exactly 512 × 512 pixels, in WebP format, and no more than 100 KB for a static sticker. Resize your PNG here first, then turn it into WebP with PNG to WebP, which keeps the transparency. A simple cartoon or text sticker easily fits under 100 KB; a detailed photo might not.
WhatsApp also suggests a thin white outline around each sticker so it shows on dark and light chats. Add it in your drawing app before resizing.
Icons, avatars and AI tools
Many app stores, website templates and game mods ask for a 512 × 512 icon, and many image generation tools work best with square inputs at this size. Resize from the largest original you have: shrinking a 2000-pixel logo to 512 keeps it crisp, while enlarging a 100-pixel one makes it blurry.
