VOB to MP4 in 3 steps

  1. Select the VOB files of your DVD title (VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB…), or drop them on the box.
  2. Check they are in the right order: they are joined into one video.
  3. Click Convert to MP4 and download the file.

From a DVD folder to a single MP4

A video DVD keeps its films in the VIDEO_TS folder, cut into VOB files of 1 GB at most. VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and so on are one title split into pieces, while VTS_01_0.VOB and VIDEO_TS.VOB usually hold only the menu. Select the numbered files of a title together and they are joined in order, the way a DVD player reads them, so the whole recording comes out as one MP4 without gaps. The MPEG-2 picture is converted to H.264 and the Dolby Digital (AC-3), MPEG or LPCM sound to AAC stereo.

DVD pictures are stored as 720×576 (PAL) or 720×480 (NTSC) with stretched pixels, which is why widescreen DVDs often look squashed after converting. Here the pixels are made square: a 16:9 PAL DVD becomes 1024×576 and a 4:3 one 768×576. Interlaced TV recordings are kept as they were recorded. Commercial films protected with CSS encryption cannot be converted, but home videos, discs from DVD recorders and camcorders, and any DVD you burned yourself can.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert VOB to MP4 for free?

Open the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD, select the VOB files of the title you want (for example VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_4.VOB) and click Convert to MP4. They are joined into one MP4 that downloads when it is ready, with no watermark and no account.

Which VOB files should I choose?

The largest numbered files of one title: VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and so on. VIDEO_TS.VOB and the files ending in _0.VOB are usually the menus. A DVD from a recorder often has one title per recording, numbered VTS_01, VTS_02…

Will a widescreen DVD keep its 16:9 shape?

Yes. DVDs store widescreen films squeezed into a 720-pixel-wide picture and tell the player to stretch them. The converter does that stretching for you, so the MP4 has square pixels and the right proportions in every player.

Why does it say my DVD is protected?

Films sold on DVD are encrypted with CSS, and copying the VOB files keeps them encrypted. Converting them would only give a garbled picture, so the page stops and says so. Home videos and DVDs you recorded or burned yourself are not encrypted.

Which browsers can do this?

DVD video is decoded and encoded again with the video encoder built into your browser: on a recent computer a one-hour DVD takes a few minutes, on a phone longer. Chrome and Edge on a computer work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, a little more slowly. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is converted by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. There is no upload to wait for, which matters with files of several gigabytes.
