Word to PDF in 3 steps

  1. Select your Word files (DOCX), or drop them on the box.
  2. Click Convert to PDF.
  3. Download the PDF and send, print or upload it.

How your Word document becomes a PDF

The converter reads the DOCX file itself: headings, paragraphs, bold and italic text, colours, bulleted and numbered lists, tables with merged cells, pictures, links, and headers and footers with page numbers. It then lays out the pages again with the page size and margins of your document, using fonts with the same letter widths as Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New, so lines break where you expect. The PDF contains real text that can be searched, selected and read aloud.

The result is close to what Word shows, but not always identical. Line and page breaks can move slightly, text boxes and floating pictures are placed in the flow of the text, footnotes are gathered at the end, and charts or SmartArt may be missing. Characters the built-in fonts do not cover, such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic or emoji, are drawn as small pictures so they still show. When the layout must be exact to the millimetre, Save as PDF in Word itself is the safest choice.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PDF look exactly like the Word document?

Very close in most documents: the same page size, margins, letter widths, headings, lists, tables and images. Line breaks can shift a little, and complex layouts with text boxes, floating pictures or charts may move or be left out. If every detail must match, use Save as PDF in Word.

Is the text in the PDF selectable and searchable?

Yes. The PDF contains real text, not a picture of each page, so you can search it, copy from it and have it read aloud, and links stay clickable. Only characters the built-in fonts lack, such as Chinese or emoji, are drawn as small pictures.

Can I convert an old .doc file?

Yes, with our DOC to PDF converter, which reads Word 97-2003 files with their text, tables, lists and pictures. This page reads DOCX, the format Word has used since 2007, which is what almost every Word document made in the last fifteen years is.

How do I convert Word to PDF on my phone?

Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap Select DOCX files and choose the document from Files, Google Drive or Downloads. The PDF is created on the phone itself and saved to your downloads, ready to attach to an email or an online form.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so contracts, CVs, reports and notes are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
