Why websites give you WebP files
WebP is a format created by Google to make websites load faster, so most sites now serve their images as WebP. When you save one of those images, you get a .webp file that some photo viewers, older Office versions and upload forms refuse to open.
JPG is accepted by practically every program, phone and website. Converting gives you a normal photo you can print, edit or attach anywhere, at a quality that looks the same as the original.

Why can I not open my WebP file?
WebP is newer than JPG and some programs, especially older photo viewers and editing apps, still do not support it. Converting the file to JPG makes it open in any program and on any device.
Will the JPG look the same as the WebP?
Yes, at normal viewing size. The image is saved at 92 percent JPG quality. The JPG is usually a little larger than the WebP, because WebP compresses more efficiently.
What about animated WebP files?
JPG cannot hold animation, so an animated WebP is converted using its first frame. For a still image there is no difference at all.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device, so your files are never sent to us or stored anywhere. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool keeps working.
