Discord emojis
Discord's own guide to custom emojis gives 128 × 128 pixels and a file size of 256 KB, and says the dimensions are more of a guideline these days. Making the file 128 × 128 yourself means you decide how it looks rather than leaving it to the upload editor. A 128 pixel PNG is normally a few KB, far under the limit.
An emoji is seen at a fraction of that size next to text. Bold shapes and thick outlines read better than fine detail, and a face cropped close works better than a whole person.
Transparent edges, not white boxes
Fit the whole picture is already chosen so nothing is cut off: ears, hands and letters stay inside the square. With a PNG or WebP that has a transparent background, the empty strips stay transparent too, so the emoji floats on dark and light themes without a white box. A JPG has no transparency, so its edges come out white. Remove the background first with Change Photo Background if you are starting from a photo, or use a PNG cut-out.
Icons and favicons
128 × 128 is also a standard icon size for browser extensions, game servers and desktop shortcuts. For a website favicon in .ico format, resize here first and then use PNG to ICO. Start from a larger version of your logo: shrinking keeps edges clean, while enlarging a 32 pixel icon to 128 makes it blurry.
