Why WAV files are so big
WAV stores sound without any compression. One minute of CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB, so a 30-minute recording weighs more than 300 MB: too big for email, slow to upload and heavy on a phone. Recording apps, studio software and many voice recorders save WAV because it keeps every detail while you edit.
Once the recording is finished, MP3 is the practical format to share it. At 192 kbps a minute takes about 1.4 MB, roughly seven times less than WAV, and at 320 kbps the result is very hard to tell apart from the original.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is an MP3 than a WAV?
A CD-quality WAV uses about 10 MB per minute. As MP3 the same minute takes about 2.4 MB at 320 kbps, 1.4 MB at 192 kbps and under 1 MB at 128 kbps, so files become between four and ten times smaller.
Which bitrate should I use: 128, 192 or 320 kbps?
Use 320 kbps for music you care about, 192 kbps as a safe default for anything, and 128 kbps for speech, such as interviews, podcasts and voice notes, where the smaller size matters more than fine detail.
Will I lose quality converting WAV to MP3?
MP3 removes sounds that the ear barely notices, so some data is discarded. At 320 kbps almost nobody hears a difference in normal listening. Keep the WAV if you still need to edit the recording, and share the MP3.
Can I convert WAV to MP3 on a Mac or iPhone?
Yes. This page works in Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad, as well as in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. There is nothing to install: select the WAV file, convert and the MP3 lands in your downloads.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device, so unreleased songs and private recordings are never sent to us or stored anywhere, and large WAV files do not have to be uploaded.
