GIFs that look good and stay small
A GIF has no sound and only 256 colours per frame, and it stores every frame almost whole, so a few seconds at a moderate size work best. Drag the handles to the moment you want, up to 30 seconds, and play the selection to check it. 480 pixels wide at 10 frames per second is a good starting point for chats and forums; raise the frame rate for fast movement.
The colours are picked once from frames across the whole clip, so they do not flicker from one frame to the next, and the GIF loops forever. The frames are read straight from the MP4, MOV or WebM file in your browser. If the GIF is too big for where you want to post it, shorten the selection or choose a smaller width before converting again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MP4 to GIF for free?
Select the MP4, drag the two handles to the start and end of the moment you want, choose a width and click Make GIF. The animated GIF downloads when it is ready, with no watermark and no sign-up. MOV, WebM and MKV videos work the same way.
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 30 seconds. GIF is an old format that stores the picture inefficiently, so longer clips quickly become tens of megabytes. For most uses, 2 to 6 seconds is ideal; for anything longer, a short MP4 is a better choice.
How do I make the GIF smaller?
Shorten the selection, choose 320 px, or keep 10 frames per second. Each of these cuts the size a lot. Calm scenes compress much better than shaky footage, so a steady clip gives a smaller GIF at the same settings.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. The GIF format has no sound at all. If you need a short clip with sound, use Trim Video instead and share the MP4, which most chat apps also play on a loop.
Which browsers can do this?
Making a GIF uses the video decoder built into your browser. Chrome and Edge on a computer or Android phone work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, but they are slower with large videos. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is processed by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. That also means there is no upload to wait for, which saves a lot of time with large videos.
