Resize image to 1600 × 1600 for eBay

eBay recommends photos of about 1600 × 1600 pixels. This makes square listing photos at exactly that size without squashing the item.

What eBay asks for

eBay's help page asks for images of at least 500 × 500 pixels, recommends about 1600 × 1600, and says square or 16:9 photos look best. The uploader takes files up to 12 MB in a range of formats, including JPEG, PNG, WebP and HEIC, and you can add up to 24 pictures per listing.

A 1600 × 1600 JPG of a product is usually a few hundred KB, far below 12 MB, and big enough for buyers to zoom in on labels, stitching and scratches.

Borders: when white works and when it does not

eBay's picture policy does not allow photos with added borders. Fit the whole picture fills the empty sides with pure white in a JPG. On a product shot against a white background, as eBay suggests, the fill blends in and there is no visible edge, just more white space around the item.

On a photo with a wooden table or a coloured wall behind the item, white bars look like a frame, which is exactly what the policy is about. For those photos choose Fill and crop the edges instead: the square is filled by the photo itself and the long sides are trimmed. Make sure the item is in the middle first.

Getting good listing photos

eBay says white backgrounds are generally best, with darker ones working better for shiny items such as jewellery. Shoot in daylight, fill most of the frame with the item, and photograph flaws honestly. Remove the photos' location data with Remove EXIF Data if you shoot at home.

Do not add your shop name or a watermark on the image: eBay's policy forbids them. Put that information in the description instead.
