When you need WAV instead of MP3
Some programs and devices only accept WAV: older audio editors, video editing projects, DJ and sampler software, burning audio CDs, and the on-hold music or voicemail greeting of many business phone systems. WAV is also easier to edit, because it is uncompressed and every cut lands exactly where you place it.
The converter writes standard WAV files at 16-bit and 44.1 kHz, the CD-quality format almost every program understands. Keep in mind that the file gets about ten times bigger, and that converting cannot bring back detail the MP3 already removed: the WAV sounds exactly like the MP3.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve the quality?
No. MP3 removes some detail when it is created and that detail cannot be recovered. The WAV sounds exactly like the MP3 it came from. You convert for compatibility with software or devices that need WAV, not for better sound.
What WAV settings does the converter use?
The files are standard PCM WAV at 16-bit and 44.1 kHz, in stereo or mono like the original. This is the CD-quality format accepted by audio editors, video editors, DJ software and phone systems.
Why is the WAV file so much bigger?
WAV is uncompressed, so it stores every sample of the sound. One minute takes about 10 MB in stereo, around ten times more than a typical MP3. That size is normal and is what editing programs expect.
Can I convert MP3 to WAV for a phone system?
Yes. Most business phone systems accept 16-bit WAV for hold music and greetings. Some older systems ask for 8 kHz mono WAV; if yours does, check its manual, since this tool creates the standard 44.1 kHz version.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device, so your audio is never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
