Inverted colors without turning the PDF into pictures
Inverting is useful both ways round. Lecture slides and dark-themed presentations with a black background use a lot of ink, so inverting them before printing gives white pages with dark text. Ordinary white documents become black pages with light text, easier on the eyes at night or on an e-reader, and some people with light sensitivity read better that way.
Most online tools do this by turning every page into an image, which blurs the text and makes it impossible to select or search. Here each page keeps its text and drawings, and a negative layer is laid over them using a standard PDF blend mode, so the result stays sharp at any zoom and the text can still be copied. Photos become negatives too, and every color turns into its opposite (red into cyan, blue into yellow). Comments and filled-in form fields are inverted along with the page; links keep working. Dark grey softens the contrast for long reading sessions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I invert the colors of a PDF for printing?
Select the PDF, keep Negative and click Invert colors. Dark backgrounds become white and light text becomes dark, so the printout uses far less ink. Then print the new PDF as usual.
Can I still select and search the text?
Yes. The pages are not turned into images: the text stays where it was and the inversion is a layer on top, so you can select, copy and search it, and it stays sharp when you zoom in.
Are images inverted too?
Yes, everything on the page is inverted: photos look like negatives and each color becomes its complementary color. That is what makes black backgrounds white, and it affects every element in the same way.
Will it look the same in every PDF reader?
It uses a blend mode that has been part of the PDF standard since 2001 and works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Adobe Acrobat and macOS Preview. Very old or very basic viewers that ignore blend modes may show a plain white or black page.
What does Dark grey do?
Instead of pure black and white it gives a dark grey background with light grey text. The contrast is lower, which many people find more comfortable for reading on a screen for a long time.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The inversion happens in your browser, on your own device. The file is never sent anywhere, so it also works with confidential documents and keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
