Remove EXIF Data in 3 steps

  1. Select your photos, or drop them on the box. You will see what hidden data they carry.
  2. Click Remove metadata.
  3. Download the clean photos, one by one or all together in a ZIP.

What your photos say about you

Every photo taken with a phone carries EXIF data: the exact GPS position where it was taken, the make and model of the phone, the date and time to the second, and sometimes your name or the app used to edit it. Many websites, chat apps and email services pass that data on untouched, so a photo of something you are selling online can reveal your home address.

This tool removes the EXIF, XMP and IPTC blocks, comments and text fields without re-compressing the picture: the image data is copied byte for byte, so the quality and the file size stay the same. Two things are kept on purpose: the colour profile, so colours do not change, and the rotation tag, so the photo is not shown sideways. HEIC photos are converted to JPG, which carries no metadata at all.

Frequently asked questions

What data does EXIF contain?

EXIF can contain the GPS coordinates where the photo was taken, the camera or phone make and model, its serial number, the date and time, the lens and exposure settings, a small preview image and the software used to edit it. Photos edited in apps may also carry XMP or IPTC data with your name and copyright.

How do I remove the location from a photo?

Select the photo here and the page shows whether it contains a GPS location. Click Remove metadata and download the clean copy. On iPhone you can also turn off location for a single share in the Options menu of the share sheet, but the original keeps it.

Does removing EXIF reduce the quality?

No. JPG, PNG and WebP photos are not re-encoded: the hidden data blocks are cut out and the picture data is copied exactly as it is. The file usually gets a few kilobytes smaller. Only HEIC photos are converted to JPG at high quality, since few websites accept HEIC.

Will my photo appear rotated after removing the metadata?

No. Phones often store photos sideways and add a tag that tells viewers to rotate them. The tool keeps only that one tag, which says nothing about you, so the photo still appears the right way up everywhere.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No, and that is the point of this tool. The metadata is removed inside your browser on your own device, so your photos and their location never leave your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded it even works without an internet connection.
