- Click Convert to DOCX.
- Download the new Word file and keep editing it.
Why move from DOC to DOCX
Newer apps handle .doc files less and less well: some upload forms reject them, Google Docs and phones open them with formatting problems, and Word itself opens them in compatibility mode. A DOCX file is smaller, safer (it cannot hold old-style macros) and opens everywhere. The converter rebuilds the document as a real Word file you can keep editing: paragraphs and headings with Word heading styles, fonts, sizes and colours, real bulleted and numbered lists, tables with merged cells, pictures, links, page size, margins and headers and footers with page numbers.
Some things from old documents are not carried over: drawings made with Word shapes and text boxes, embedded Excel charts and objects, tracked changes and comments, and form fields. Footnotes become numbered notes at the end of the document. For a long legal or academic document, check the result before sending it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep editing the DOCX file?
Yes. The result is an ordinary Word document with real paragraphs, heading styles, lists and tables, not a picture of the pages. It opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Apple Pages, where you can edit it like any other document.
Is anything lost when converting DOC to DOCX?
Text, formatting, lists, tables, pictures and links come through. Word shapes, text boxes, embedded charts, comments and tracked changes are left out, and footnotes are placed at the end. For most letters, CVs and reports nothing visible changes.
Can I convert several .doc files at once?
Yes. Select up to 20 files at once and each becomes its own DOCX. When there is more than one, they are also offered together in a single ZIP file so you can download them in one click.
Does Microsoft Word still open .doc files?
Yes, but in compatibility mode, where newer features are switched off. Saving as DOCX in Word or converting here removes that limitation and makes the file open properly in Google Docs, on phones and in online forms.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so contracts, CVs, reports and letters are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
