Merge Odd and Even Pages in 3 steps

  1. Select the PDF with the front pages (odd), then the one with the back pages (even).
  2. Say whether the back pages are in reverse order, as they are when you turn the whole stack over.
  3. Click Merge pages and download one PDF in reading order.

Double-sided scans from a one-sided scanner

Most office scanners and printer feeders scan only one side of the paper. The usual trick for a double-sided document is to scan the stack once for the fronts, turn the stack over and scan it again for the backs. You end up with two files, pages 1, 3, 5 in one and pages 6, 4, 2 in the other, and this tool weaves them together: front 1, back 1, front 2, back 2, and so on.

When you turn the stack over, the last back is scanned first, so the back pages arrive in reverse order. That is the default setting; choose the same order as the fronts if your scanner kept them in order. If the scanner saved everything in a single file, the fronts followed by the backs, select just that file and it is split in half and merged the same way. If one part has more pages than the other, the extra pages go at the end and the page tells you, so you can check the order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I merge odd and even pages into one PDF?

Select the PDF with the odd pages (the fronts) first and the PDF with the even pages (the backs) second, then click Merge pages. The new PDF alternates them: page 1 from the first file, page 1 from the second, page 2 from the first, and so on.

My back pages are in reverse order. What do I choose?

Keep In reverse order, the default. When you turn the stack over to scan the backs, the last sheet is scanned first, so the backs come out last to first; the tool turns them around before merging.

I have one PDF with all the fronts and then all the backs

Select only that file. It is split in the middle, with the first half taken as the fronts and the second half as the backs, and the two halves are merged in reading order.

What if a back page is blank and I did not scan it?

Then one part has fewer pages and the pairs shift from that point on. Rescan with the blank back included, or add a blank page in its place, for a correct result. The page warns you when the two parts have different page counts.

Does it work with more than two files?

Yes. With three or more files the pages are taken in turn from each file, one page at a time, which is handy for putting together parts scanned in batches.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Merging happens in your browser, on your own device. The file is never sent anywhere, so it also works with confidential documents and keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
