A 4:1 strip from a normal photo

LinkedIn's help gives 1584 pixels wide by 396 high for the profile background, four times wider than tall. A 4:3 photo from a phone has to lose most of its height to get there: Fill and crop the edges keeps a horizontal band from the middle and trims the top and bottom evenly.

Pick a picture where the interesting part runs across the middle: a skyline, a desk, a landscape, a stage. A portrait shot will lose the head or the feet. If the part you want is high or low in the photo, crop it roughly with Crop Image first and then resize here.

Leave room for your profile photo

Your round profile photo sits on top of the background. According to design guides, it covers part of the lower left on a computer and the lower middle in the app. Keep text, logos and anything important in the upper half and towards the right, and treat the lower left as background only.

Less is more. A short line of text in large letters reads on a phone; a full sentence in small type does not.

Company pages use a different size

A LinkedIn company page is not a personal profile. LinkedIn's page specifications give 1512 × 256 pixels for the cover image on the Page tab and a 3 MB limit. Type those numbers into the width and height boxes in All options to make a company cover with the same tool.

For both, JPG is lighter for photos and PNG keeps text and logos crisp. A 1584 × 396 file is far below the 8 MB limit either way.
