Transport streams from TV, IPTV and the web
A .TS file is an MPEG transport stream, the format of digital TV. Satellite and terrestrial receivers with a recording function, IPTV boxes, OBS and stream downloaders that save HLS (M3U8) videos all produce it. Inside there is usually H.264 or HEVC video, or MPEG-2 on older standard-definition channels, with AAC, MPEG audio (MP2) or Dolby Digital sound.
In Fast mode, H.264 and HEVC video is copied into the MP4 without re-encoding, so even an hour-long recording is ready in seconds with exactly the same picture. MPEG-2 video is converted to H.264, and the sound becomes AAC unless it already is. Most compatible turns HEVC into H.264 as well, for older TVs and computers. Recordings from pay-TV channels that are still encrypted cannot be converted.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert TS to MP4 for free?
Select the TS file and click Convert to MP4. When the video is H.264 or HEVC it is ready in seconds; MPEG-2 recordings take about as long as the video on a computer. The MP4 downloads straight away, with no watermark.
Does converting TS to MP4 lose quality?
Not in Fast mode with H.264 or HEVC video: the picture is copied exactly and the page tells you so. MPEG-2 TV recordings are re-encoded at high quality and the same resolution, and the difference is very hard to see.
Can it convert recordings from my TV receiver?
Yes, as long as the recording is not encrypted. Free-to-air recordings from satellite, cable and terrestrial receivers work. Pay-TV recordings that the receiver keeps encrypted only play on that receiver, and the page says so instead of producing a broken video.
What about a video saved from an M3U8 stream?
Stream downloaders save HLS videos as one TS file, usually H.264 with AAC sound. Those become MP4 in seconds without re-encoding. If you only have many small .ts pieces, join them with the downloader first.
Is the VIDEO_TS folder of a DVD a TS file?
No. VIDEO_TS is the folder of a video DVD, and the films inside it are VOB files, not TS. Use the VOB to MP4 converter for those: select the VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB… files and they become one MP4.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is converted by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. There is no upload to wait for, which matters with files of several gigabytes.
