When PNG is the better choice for iPhone photos
PNG is lossless, so every pixel of the decoded photo is kept exactly as it is. That makes it the right format when you are going to edit a photo several times, cut out its background or use it in a design, because saving it again never adds compression artefacts.
The trade-off is size: a PNG of a 12-megapixel iPhone photo can be 15 to 25 MB, several times larger than a JPG. To share photos or upload them to a website, HEIC to JPG is usually the better choice.
Frequently asked questions
Should I convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?
Choose JPG to share, upload or email photos, because the files are small and open everywhere. Choose PNG when you will edit the photo, remove the background or use it in a design, because PNG never loses quality when saved again.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC compresses very efficiently, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. A 2 MB HEIC photo can easily become a 20 MB PNG. Nothing is wrong with the file; that is simply the cost of a lossless format.
Does it keep Live Photo motion?
No. A Live Photo is a still image plus a short video. The converter keeps the still photo and turns it into a PNG; the motion part is not included in the result.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device, so your personal photos are never sent to us or stored anywhere. The converter needs a few seconds to load the first time you use it.
