Why XLSB files cause trouble outside Excel
XLSB is Excel’s binary format: the same workbook as XLSX, but stored in a compact binary form that opens and saves faster for very large sheets. Banks, ERP systems and finance teams use it for big exports. The problem is that Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, many import tools and Python or Power BI pipelines either refuse it or need extra plug-ins, while XLSX is accepted everywhere.
The converter copies every sheet with its values, formulas, number and date formats, merged cells and column widths into a standard XLSX. XLSB files can also hold VBA macros, and XLSX cannot: macros, along with charts, pictures and pivot tables, are not carried over, so keep the original if you rely on them. For the data itself, the XLSX is ready to share or import.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open an XLSB file without Excel?
Convert it to XLSX here, then open it in Google Sheets, Numbers, LibreOffice or any spreadsheet app. The conversion takes a few seconds and needs no software.
Are formulas kept?
Yes. Formulas are copied as formulas, together with their last calculated values, so totals and lookups keep working in the XLSX.
What happens to macros in my XLSB file?
They are not kept. XLSX is a macro-free format by design, so any VBA code is left out. Keep the original XLSB, or save it as XLSM in Excel, if you need the macros.
Why is the XLSX bigger than the XLSB?
XLSB stores data in a dense binary form, while XLSX uses compressed XML. For the same workbook the XLSX is usually a little larger. Nothing is added; it is only a different way of writing the same data.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so budgets, client lists and payroll figures are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even offline.
