Why BMP files are so big
BMP is the old Windows bitmap format: it usually stores every pixel with no compression at all, so a single full-screen picture can weigh several megabytes. It still comes out of Microsoft Paint, some scanners and screenshot tools, medical and industrial devices and older software. Many websites and email services refuse BMP, and phones may not preview it.
JPG compresses the same picture to a fraction of the size with no visible difference at normal viewing size; images are saved at 92 percent quality. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. For screenshots with small text or graphics, BMP to PNG keeps edges sharper.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert BMP to JPG?
Select one or more BMP files and click Convert to JPG. Each JPG downloads straight away, or all of them together in a ZIP. Up to 20 files of up to 50 MB each can be converted at a time, free and without a watermark.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
Usually 80 to 95 percent smaller for photos and scans, because BMP stores pixels uncompressed. A 6 MB BMP often becomes a JPG of 300 to 800 KB that looks the same on screen.
Will the quality drop?
Not visibly at normal size. JPG removes detail the eye barely notices, at 92 percent quality. For images with sharp text, thin lines or flat colours, such as screenshots and diagrams, PNG keeps them crisper without any loss.
Can I open BMP files on my phone?
Many phone galleries and messaging apps do not show BMP. Converting to JPG gives a file that every phone, browser and app can display. This page works on phones too: select the BMP from Files or Downloads.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Images are decoded and converted inside your browser on your own device, so scans of documents and private photos are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
