BMP to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Select your BMP images, or drop them on the box.
  2. Click Convert to PNG.
  3. Download each PNG, or all of them in a ZIP.

Same pixels, a fraction of the size

BMP and PNG are both lossless, but BMP usually does not compress at all, while PNG packs the same pixels much more efficiently. Converting keeps the image identical, down to the last pixel, and typically makes screenshots, diagrams and icons several times smaller.

PNG is supported by every browser, phone, office suite and design tool, which BMP is not. When the BMP stores transparency, it is kept in the PNG. For photographs, where file size matters most, BMP to JPG gives an even smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to PNG?

Select one or more BMP files and click Convert to PNG. Each PNG downloads straight away, or all of them together in a ZIP. You can convert up to 20 bitmaps at a time, free and without a watermark.

Is converting BMP to PNG lossless?

Yes. PNG uses lossless compression, so every pixel of the BMP is copied exactly. You can convert back and forth without losing anything, which is not the case with JPG.

Why is the PNG smaller than the BMP?

Most BMP files store each pixel raw, using three or four bytes per pixel. PNG compresses repeated colours and patterns without throwing anything away, which shrinks screenshots and graphics a lot and photos somewhat less.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes, when the BMP has it. Bitmaps saved with an alpha channel keep their transparent areas in the PNG. Most BMP files from Paint or scanners have no transparency, so their background stays exactly as it is.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Images are decoded and converted inside your browser on your own device, so scans of documents and private photos are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
