What happens to your .doc file
DOC is the format Word used until 2007, and it is still everywhere: old contracts, school forms, CVs and templates sent by companies and public offices. The converter reads the binary file itself in your browser: paragraphs, headings, bold, italic and underlined text, font sizes and colours, alignment and indents, bulleted and numbered lists, tables with merged cells and shading, pictures, links, page size and margins, headers and footers with page numbers, and footnotes. The PDF has real, selectable text.
Pages are laid out again with fonts that have the same letter widths as Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri and Courier New, so the result is close to what Word shows but not always identical: line breaks can move a little, text boxes and drawings made with Word shapes are left out, charts and embedded Excel objects may only show as a picture or not at all, and footnotes are gathered at the end. Password-protected .doc files cannot be opened.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between DOC and DOCX?
DOC is the binary format of Word 97 to 2003; DOCX is the newer XML format Word has used since 2007. Both hold the same kind of document. If you have a .docx file, use our Word to PDF tool instead, which reads it directly.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
Very close in most documents: same page size, margins, fonts with the same widths, headings, lists, tables and pictures. Line breaks may shift slightly, and Word shapes, text boxes and charts may move or be missing. If every detail must match, use Save as PDF in Word.
Can I convert a .doc file on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the button and pick the .doc file from Files, Google Drive or your downloads. The PDF is created on the phone itself and saved to your downloads, ready to attach to an email.
Why does my .doc file give an error?
The file may be protected with a password, damaged, or not really a Word file: some websites save HTML or RTF with a .doc name, and those are converted too. Files from Word 6 and Word 95 (before 1997) only keep their text.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so contracts, CVs, reports and letters are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
