EML to PDF in 3 steps

  1. Select one or more .eml files, or drop them on the box.
  2. Choose one PDF per email or all in one PDF, and whether picture attachments are added.
  3. Click Convert to PDF and download the PDF, or a ZIP for several emails.

What ends up in the PDF of an email

An .eml file is the email exactly as it travelled: a block of headers followed by the message in MIME parts, usually a plain-text version, an HTML version and attachments encoded as Base64. The converter decodes all of it in your browser, including quoted-printable text, encoded subjects and names (=?UTF-8?…?=) and older character sets such as ISO-8859-1, Windows-1252, ISO-2022-JP, Shift_JIS, GB2312 and Big5. The PDF starts with the subject and a header block (From, To, Cc, the date in the sender’s time zone, attachments with their sizes), followed by the HTML message with its tables, colours and embedded pictures, as real text you can search and copy.

Nothing is fetched from the internet while converting. Newsletters often load their pictures and tracking pixels from a web server; those are left out (their description is shown when the email has one), so converting an email here never tells the sender that you opened it. Scripts are removed. Pictures sent as attachments can be added after the message, other attachments such as PDF or Word files are listed by name and size, and emails forwarded as attachments are printed after the message.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save an email as an EML file?

In Gmail, open the email, click the three-dot menu and choose Download message. In Thunderbird, Apple Mail and Windows Mail, drag the message to your desktop or use File, Save As. Outlook on the web and the new Outlook for Windows also save messages as .eml.

Can I combine several EML files into one PDF?

Yes. Select all the files and choose All in one PDF: the emails are put in date order, oldest first, and each one starts on a new page. With One PDF per email you get a ZIP with one PDF for each message, named like the original files.

Are attachments included in the PDF?

Every attachment is listed under the header with its name and size. Pictures (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP) can be added after the message. Other files such as PDF or Word documents cannot be placed inside the email’s PDF; save them from your email program, or convert them with Word to PDF.

Why are some images missing?

Pictures stored inside the email always appear. Many newsletters link their pictures from a web server instead, and downloading them would tell the sender that you opened the email, and when. They are not loaded; the alt text is shown in their place when the email has one.

Does it work with Japanese, Chinese or Russian emails?

Yes. Old encodings such as ISO-2022-JP, Shift_JIS, GB2312, GBK, Big5, KOI8-R and Windows-1251 are decoded correctly, and text in any script appears in the PDF, emoji included. Chinese, Japanese and Korean text can still be selected and searched in the PDF.

Is my email uploaded to a server?

No. The email is read and turned into a PDF inside your browser on your own device, so private conversations, invoices and contracts are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
