Mute Video in 3 steps

  1. Select your video, or drop it on the box.
  2. Click Mute video.
  3. Download the silent video, in the same format and quality.

Silent video, same picture

Background chatter, wind noise or a song you cannot use: sometimes the sound has to go before a video can be shared or put on a website. This tool drops the sound track and copies the video track into a new file without re-encoding it, so even a long video is done in seconds and looks exactly like the original.

The file keeps its format, so an MP4 stays MP4 and an iPhone MOV stays MOV. A silent video is also what websites need for autoplaying background videos, since browsers only autoplay videos without sound, and it is a little smaller because the audio data is gone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove audio from a video for free?

Select the video and click Mute video. The sound track is removed and the picture is copied as it is, so the silent video is ready in seconds. It downloads in the same format, with no watermark and no sign-up.

Does muting change the video quality?

No. The video track is copied byte for byte into the new file, without re-encoding, and the page confirms it. Only the sound is removed, so the file also gets a little smaller.

Can I keep only part of the sound?

Not with this tool, which removes all of it. To keep the sound of only part of the video, use Trim Video to cut that part out. To keep the sound and not the picture, use Video to MP3.

Does it work with iPhone videos?

Yes. MOV videos from an iPhone, including HEVC ones, are muted without re-encoding and stay MOV files that play in Photos and on any Apple device. MP4, WebM and MKV videos work the same way.

Which browsers can do this?

Muting only needs a recent browser, because nothing is re-encoded. Chrome and Edge on a computer or Android phone work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, but they are slower with large videos. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is processed by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. That also means there is no upload to wait for, which saves a lot of time with large videos.
