Formatting and validating in one step
APIs and log files usually deliver JSON on a single line, which is impossible to read. Formatting adds line breaks and indentation so you can see the structure at a glance, compare versions and spot the field you are looking for.
To format a file, the tool first has to parse it, so it also validates it. If the JSON is broken, you get the exact error message instead of a formatted file: a trailing comma, a missing quote or an unclosed bracket.

How do I format JSON?

How do I check if my JSON is valid?
Run it through the formatter. If the file is valid, you get the formatted result. If not, you see the error message from the parser, which points to the problem, such as an unexpected token or an unterminated string.
Should I use 2 or 4 spaces?
Both are common. Two spaces keep deeply nested files compact and are the default in JavaScript projects. Four spaces are typical in Python and many other languages. Tabs let each reader choose the width in their own editor.
Is it safe to format JSON with private data?
Yes. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded, so API keys, tokens or customer data inside it stay on your computer. Still, avoid sharing formatted files that contain secrets.
