XLSX to XLS in 3 steps
- Select your XLSX files, or drop them on the box.
- Click Convert to XLS.
- Download the XLS file, or all of them in a ZIP.
When you still need an XLS file
Some accounting packages, government portals, bank uploads and older computers only accept the Excel 97-2003 format. This converter writes a real binary XLS file, not an XLSX with a new name, so those systems can open it. Every sheet is copied with its values, number and date formats, merged cells and column widths.
Formulas are saved as their calculated results, so every number looks the same but no longer recalculates; keep the XLSX as your working copy. XLS also has hard limits of 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet, so split very large sheets first. Fonts, colours, charts, pictures and macros are not carried over.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert XLSX to XLS?
Select the XLSX file and click Convert to XLS. A workbook in the Excel 97-2003 format downloads straight away and opens in old and new versions of Excel. Several files can be converted at once and downloaded together in a ZIP.
Are formulas kept in the XLS file?
Their results are. Each formula cell is saved with the value it shows in the XLSX, so totals and lookups look exactly the same, but they no longer recalculate when you change other cells. If you need live formulas, keep the XLSX as your working copy.
Is there a size limit for XLS files?
The format itself allows at most 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet. If a sheet is bigger, split it into several sheets in Excel first, or keep the XLSX. Files of up to 50 MB can be converted here for free.
Why does a website say my file is not a valid XLS?
Some sites check what is inside the file, not only its name, so renaming report.xlsx to report.xls does not work. This tool rewrites the workbook in the real binary XLS format, which passes those checks.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?
No. The workbook is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so customer lists, prices and payroll data are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it works even offline.
