The smallest square some forms accept
The Indian e-visa form wants a square photo from 350 × 350 up to 1000 × 1000 pixels. 350 × 350 is the bottom of that range: it passes the size check, and the file is light enough to upload on a weak connection. If your photo has the room, a larger square such as 600 × 600 gives the officer a clearer face, and it is just as valid.
For a visa photo, place the frame on the face yourself in Passport Photo Maker or Exam & Visa Photo Resizer, since a centred trim does not check how much of the frame your head fills. Use this page when the photo is already framed and only the pixel size is wrong.
Thumbnails and small avatars
Forums, school portals and company directories often show profile pictures and product thumbnails at a few hundred pixels. A 350 × 350 square is sharp at that size and weighs only a few dozen KB as a JPG. Uploading a 4000-pixel phone photo instead makes the page slow and lets the site crop it however it likes.
