XLSX to ODS in 3 steps
- Select your Excel files (XLSX or XLS), or drop them on the box.
- Click Convert to ODS.
- Download the ODS file and open it in LibreOffice Calc.
When an ODS file is required
ODS is an open, ISO-standard spreadsheet format. Some governments, schools and public tenders require OpenDocument files, and LibreOffice users simply prefer them. The converter writes a real ODS file with every sheet and its values, formulas, number and date formats, merged cells and column widths.
As with any conversion between the two programs, fonts, fill colours, charts, images and macros are not carried over. Formulas are written in OpenDocument syntax with their last calculated result; functions that exist only in Excel may show an error in LibreOffice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert XLSX to ODS?
Select the XLSX file and click Convert to ODS. The ODS spreadsheet downloads straight away and opens in LibreOffice Calc, OpenOffice, Google Sheets and recent versions of Excel. Older XLS files can be converted the same way.
Do I need LibreOffice to open the result?
No. ODS opens in LibreOffice and OpenOffice, which are free, and also in Google Sheets, Collabora, Numbers on Mac and recent versions of Excel. It is the default spreadsheet format of most open-source office suites.
Are formulas converted?
Yes. Formulas are saved in OpenDocument syntax with their last calculated values, so LibreOffice recalculates them as usual. Functions that only exist in recent Excel versions, such as XLOOKUP, may not be calculated by older LibreOffice versions.
Is the formatting kept?
Number formats such as dates, currencies and percentages, merged cells and column widths are kept. Fonts, cell colours, borders, charts and images are not, because the converter is built for the data. Check the sheet after converting if its look matters.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?
No. The workbook is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so customer lists, prices and payroll data are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it works even offline.
