PNG to ICO in 3 steps

- Choose Favicon or Windows icon sizes.
- Click Create ICO and download the .ico file.
One ICO file, every size inside
An ICO file is a small container that holds the same icon at several sizes, so browsers and Windows can pick the sharpest one for each place: a 16-pixel browser tab, a 32-pixel shortcut, a 48-pixel desktop icon or a 256-pixel tile. The Favicon option creates 16, 32 and 48 pixels, the set browsers and Google read from favicon.ico. The Windows icon option adds 24, 64, 128 and 256 pixels for program and folder icons.
Each size is scaled down from your image in steps for a clean result and stored as PNG inside the ICO, a format Windows has supported since Vista and every modern browser reads. Transparency is kept. If the image is not square, it is centred on a transparent square instead of being stretched. A square PNG of at least 256 pixels gives the sharpest icon.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a favicon.ico from a PNG?
Select your logo as a PNG, keep Favicon (16, 32, 48 px) and click Create ICO. Rename the file to favicon.ico and put it in the root folder of your website; browsers and Google will find it there automatically.
Which sizes should an ICO file contain?
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs, bookmarks and search results. For a Windows program or folder icon, include sizes up to 256 pixels so the icon stays sharp on high-resolution screens and in large icon views.
Does the ICO keep a transparent background?
Yes. Transparent areas of the PNG stay transparent at every size, so the icon blends with light and dark browser tabs and desktop backgrounds. JPG images have no transparency, so they keep their background.
Can I use a JPG or SVG instead of a PNG?
Yes. JPG, WebP and SVG images are accepted too. SVG logos are drawn at high resolution first, which gives very sharp small icons. For a transparent icon, start from a PNG or SVG with a transparent background.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Images are decoded and converted inside your browser on your own device, so scans of documents and private photos are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
