A plain background without a studio
ID photo rules are strict about the background. Most passports want white or very light grey, Indonesian KTP, CPNS and SKCK photos want red or blue, and some Asian ID cards use light blue. Taking the photo against a wall rarely gives a perfectly even colour: there are shadows, a door frame, a picture. This tool finds the person in the photo with a portrait matting model (MODNet) and places them on a flat colour of your choice, keeping the hair edges soft.
The model is downloaded once from this site (about 7 MB) and runs inside your browser, so the photo of your face is never sent to a server. It works best with one person facing the camera, in good light, with the head and shoulders fully in the picture. Very fine hair against a busy background can leave a faint halo; a plain wall gives the cleanest result. Some countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, reject passport photos edited with software: for those, take the photo against a white wall instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change a photo background to white online?
Select the photo, leave White chosen and click Change background. The person is cut out automatically and placed on pure white. Download the JPG; to crop it to 35 × 45 mm or another ID size, open it in Passport Photo Maker.
Which colour does my ID photo need?
It depends on the document. Most passports and visas ask for white or light grey. In Indonesia, CPNS and SKCK photos are usually red, and the KTP background is red or blue depending on the year of birth. Always check the rules of the office that will receive the photo.
Will the edited photo be accepted for a passport?
Not everywhere. The US and UK passport rules say the photo must not be altered by software, so take it against a white wall for those. Many exam, job and ID forms accept a photo with the background changed as long as the face is unchanged, which this tool guarantees.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The background is changed in your browser on your own device. Only the cut-out model is downloaded from this site, once, and kept by your browser for next time.
