Without stretching
Typing 600 and 600 into most editors squeezes a tall phone photo into a square, and faces come out wide. Here the photo is scaled until it covers the whole 600 × 600 frame and then trimmed at the centre, so the proportions do not change. If you would rather keep the whole picture, switch to Fit the whole picture: it adds white bars instead of trimming.
Because the trim is centred, put the subject in the middle of the photo. If the face sits near an edge, crop it roughly first with Crop Image, then come back here.
Visa photos need more than the size
For a US visa or Diversity Visa photo, 600 × 600 is the smallest size accepted, and the head has to take up a set share of the frame. A centred trim cannot guarantee that. Shops, catalogues and profile pictures
Marketplaces and online catalogues often want every product photo the same square size so the grid lines up. Select all the photos at once: each comes out at 600 × 600 with its own file. A JPG stays JPG and a PNG stays PNG, so transparent logos keep their transparency.
Making a small image bigger works too, but it cannot add detail. A 300-pixel picture blown up to 600 looks soft; start from the largest version you have.
