Remove PDF Metadata in 3 steps
- Select one or more PDF files: their metadata is shown straight away.
- Check what was found: author, software, dates, XMP data, comment authors.
- Click Remove metadata and download the clean PDF.
What a PDF says about you, and what gets removed
Besides the pages, a PDF carries information about itself: the title and the author (often your full name, taken from your Word or computer account), the program and version used to create it, the exact date and time it was created and last changed, and an XMP block that can repeat all of that and add a document ID and an edit history. Comments keep the name of whoever wrote them, and photos placed in the PDF can still carry their camera data, sometimes with GPS location. Before you send a CV, a contract or an anonymous review, it is worth checking.
This tool shows the metadata as soon as you choose the file and then removes all of it: the document information fields, every XMP block (of the document, pages, images and fonts), private data saved by editing apps, the file ID, comment authors and dates, and the EXIF, XMP and IPTC data inside JPEG photos, taken out without recompressing them. The file is rebuilt from scratch, so older versions of the metadata kept by incremental saves are gone too. The visible pages, text, links and form fields do not change.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see the metadata of a PDF?
Select the PDF: the title, author, creating app, PDF producer, creation and modification dates, XMP block and comment authors are listed before anything is changed. You can stop there if you only wanted to look.
What metadata is removed?
All of it: the document information (title, author, subject, keywords, app, producer, dates and any custom fields), every XMP metadata block, private editing data, the file ID, the names and dates of comment authors, and camera data inside JPEG photos.
Does removing metadata change the content of my PDF?
No. The pages look exactly the same, the text can still be selected, and links, bookmarks and form fields keep working. Only the hidden information about the file is taken out.
Can I remove metadata from a password-protected PDF?
Not directly, because the metadata is encrypted along with the content. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, then remove the metadata here.
Is it still a valid PDF/A after removing the metadata?
No. PDF/A archive files must keep their XMP block, so removing it also removes the PDF/A label. Keep the original if you need to submit an archive copy.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Reading and removing the metadata happens in your browser, on your own device. The file is never sent anywhere, so it also works with confidential documents and keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
