From web subtitles to the format everything opens

SRT is the subtitle format that TVs, media players (VLC, Kodi, Plex, MPC), editing software (Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve) and upload forms all accept. WebVTT is its web cousin, with extras SRT cannot hold: cue positions, style blocks, notes, speaker tags and classes. The converter keeps the text and timing, numbers every subtitle, writes commas before the milliseconds and leaves out what SRT has no place for, so no stray code shows up on screen.

Captions saved from YouTube are a special case: their automatic VTT shows each line twice while it scrolls up, and every word has its own timestamp. Converted naively they give doubled, stuttering subtitles. This tool recognises the pattern and keeps each spoken line once, at the moment it appears. Bold, italic and underline survive; speaker names in voice tags are removed, as players hide them too. The SRT is saved as UTF-8 with a byte order mark, which TVs and older players need to show accents properly.

Frequently asked questions

Are the positions and colours of the VTT kept?

No. SRT has no standard way to store them, so lines are shown at the default place at the bottom, in the player's own colours. Bold, italic and underline are kept.

Why does my YouTube subtitle file show every line twice?

YouTube's automatic captions roll up: each cue repeats the previous line above the new one, with tiny 10 ms cues in between. The converter removes those repeats, so each line appears once in the SRT.

Can I use the SRT in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. Both import SRT as a captions or subtitle track (File, Import in Premiere; drag the file into the media pool in Resolve) and you can edit and burn them into the video from there.

What happens to NOTE and STYLE blocks?

They are left out. NOTE blocks are comments for whoever edits the file and STYLE blocks are CSS for web players; neither has an SRT equivalent, and neither is ever shown as a subtitle.

Are my subtitles uploaded?

No. The subtitles are read and converted by your browser on your own device and never sent to a server.
