When PNG is the right choice for an AVIF file
AVIF is the newest image format on the web and many sites now serve logos, stickers and product cut-outs in it. Older versions of Photoshop and Office, and many upload forms, still refuse it. PNG is the most widely supported format that keeps a transparent background, so the converted file drops cleanly onto slides, documents and designs.
PNG is lossless, so every pixel of the decoded AVIF is kept without any new compression artefacts. The PNG will be several times larger than the AVIF; for photos without transparency, AVIF to JPG gives a much smaller file.
Frequently asked questions
Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. PNG supports transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of your AVIF stay exactly as they are. That makes PNG the best choice for logos, icons and cut-out product images saved from websites.
Should I convert AVIF to PNG or JPG?
Choose PNG for logos, graphics, screenshots and anything with a transparent background, or when you will keep editing the image. Choose JPG for ordinary photos, because the file is much smaller and transparency does not matter there.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF uses very efficient lossy compression, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. A 60 KB AVIF can easily become a 600 KB PNG. Nothing is wrong with the file; that is simply the cost of a lossless format every program understands.
Does my browser support this converter?
The tool uses your browser to read the AVIF file. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all support it. If your browser is very old and cannot open AVIF images, update it or try another one.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device, so your images are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded you could even disconnect from the internet and it would keep working.
