MTS to MP4 in 3 steps

  1. Select your MTS or M2TS video, or drop it on the box.
  2. Click Convert to MP4.
  3. Download the MP4 when it is ready.

AVCHD camcorder videos, ready for phones and editors

Sony Handycam, Panasonic and Canon camcorders, and some Nikon and Sony cameras, record in AVCHD: each clip is an .MTS file inside PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM, and becomes .M2TS when copied with the camera software or burned to Blu-ray. The video inside is already H.264, but the container and the Dolby Digital (AC-3) sound are what phones, Windows Photos and many editors trip over.

So the picture is copied into the MP4 untouched, which takes seconds even for long clips and keeps every bit of the original quality, including 1080i and 1080p at 50 or 60 frames per second. Only the sound is converted, from Dolby Digital to AAC stereo. Clips recorded at 1440×1080 keep their 16:9 shape. Nothing is uploaded, so the size of the file does not matter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MTS to MP4 for free?

Copy the .MTS file from the camcorder or its SD card (PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM), select it here and click Convert to MP4. The MP4 downloads a few seconds later, with no watermark and no account.

Does converting MTS to MP4 lose quality?

No. The H.264 video of an AVCHD clip is copied as it is, not re-encoded, so the picture is identical to the original. Only the Dolby Digital sound is turned into AAC, which every device plays.

What is the difference between MTS and M2TS?

None for the video: both are AVCHD recordings in an MPEG transport stream. The camcorder writes .MTS, and the camera software or a Blu-ray disc names the same file .M2TS. Both are converted the same way.

Can it convert large MTS files?

Yes. The file is read in pieces and the MP4 is written as it goes, and nothing is uploaded, so even clips of several gigabytes work. You need enough free space on your device for the MP4.

Why does my MTS file stop at 2 GB or 4 GB?

Camcorders split long recordings into several MTS files (00000.MTS, 00001.MTS…). Each one is a separate part; convert them one by one, then join the MP4 files in a video editor.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is converted by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. There is no upload to wait for, which matters with files of several gigabytes.
