Getting an image back from Base64
Images often travel as Base64 text: inside HTML emails and web pages, in JSON responses from an API, in database exports and in log files. To look at one or save it, the text has to be decoded back into bytes. Paste the whole data URI or only the code, with or without line breaks, and the tool does the rest.
The file type is read from the decoded bytes, not from the prefix, so you always get the right extension: PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, SVG, AVIF, BMP, ICO or TIFF. URL-safe Base64 with - and _ is accepted too, and missing = padding is added. You can even paste a whole CSS rule or img tag: the first data URI in it is used.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Base64 to an image?
Paste the Base64 text or data URI into the box and click Convert to image. The image appears as a preview and downloads in its original format. You can also select a .txt file that contains the code instead of pasting it.
Does the code need the data:image prefix?
No. You can paste a full data URI such as data:image/png;base64,iVBOR… or only the Base64 part. The tool recognises the image type from the decoded data itself, so the prefix is optional and a wrong prefix does not matter.
What image formats can be decoded?
PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, SVG, AVIF, BMP, ICO and TIFF are recognised and saved with the right extension. If the code decodes to something that is not an image, such as a PDF or text, the tool tells you instead of saving a broken file.
Why does it say my Base64 is not valid?
Usually part of the code is missing, for example because it was cut off when copied, or the text contains characters that are not Base64, such as quotes or %20. Copy the full string again, from the first character after base64, to the last one.
Is the code uploaded to a server?
No. The Base64 text is decoded inside your browser on your own device, so the image is never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even without an internet connection.
