Square, with or without cropping
A phone photo is 3:4 or 9:16, not square. Fill and crop the edges trims the top and bottom of a tall photo evenly, which suits portraits with space above the head and landscapes with sky to spare. Fit the whole picture keeps everything and adds white bars on the sides. For a coloured or blurred border, export a PNG: the bars are transparent and you can fill them in any editor.
If the subject is not in the middle, the centred crop can cut it. Pick the square yourself with Crop Image and then resize the result here.
Why not post the full photo
Instagram keeps photos up to 1080 pixels wide and scales down anything wider. Sending a 4000-pixel photo does not show more detail; it only takes longer to upload, and the app picks its own resampling. A 1080 × 1080 JPG gives you the final pixels before you post, and you see exactly what your followers will see.
The same square works for Facebook posts, WhatsApp profile pictures, LinkedIn images and the square tiles many online shops use.
A carousel that lines up
For a carousel, every slide should be the same shape. Select all the photos at once and each comes out at exactly 1080 × 1080. For the taller portrait look that fills more of the screen, use 1080 × 1350 instead.
