Two pages side by side, or a whole deck on one sheet

Putting several pages on one sheet (printers call it N-up) is the usual way to print lecture slides, handouts and long reports without using a ream of paper: 2 pages per sheet halves the paper, 4 cuts it to a quarter and 9 fits a whole slide deck on a few sheets. The print dialog can do it too, but only for that one print job; here you get a new PDF you can keep, email or send to a print shop.

The sheet turns automatically to the orientation that shows the pages largest: two portrait pages go side by side on a landscape sheet, four go in a 2 × 2 grid on a portrait sheet, and landscape slides are stacked the other way. Pages are read left to right, then top to bottom. They are placed as they are, not as pictures, so text stays sharp at any zoom and can still be selected and searched. Rotated pages, cropped pages and pages of different sizes are each fitted to their own place on the sheet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put 2 pages on one sheet in a PDF?

Select the PDF, keep 2 pages in Pages per sheet and click Make PDF. Each sheet of the new PDF holds two pages side by side, on a landscape sheet of the same size as the original pages, or on A4 or Letter if you choose one.

Will the text be smaller when I print?

Yes, that is the trade-off: with 2 pages per sheet each page is printed at about 70 percent of its size, with 4 at 50 percent. Normal text stays readable at 2 and 4 per sheet; 9 and 16 suit slides and pages with large type.

Does it lower the quality of the PDF?

No. The pages are placed on the sheets as vector content, not converted to images, so text and drawings stay sharp at any zoom and the text can still be selected and searched.

What happens to links and form fields?

The filled-in values of forms, comments and stamps are kept as part of the page. Links and fillable fields stop being clickable, because the pages are now smaller parts of a bigger sheet.

Can I make a booklet instead?

For a booklet you fold and staple, the pages need a special order on both sides of the sheet. Use the PDF Booklet Maker, which does that for you.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Placing the pages on the sheets happens in your browser, on your own device. The file is never sent anywhere, so it also works with confidential documents and keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
