Excel to JSON in 3 steps

  1. Select your Excel file (XLSX, XLS or ODS), or drop it on the box.
  2. Choose a sheet, or all of them.
  3. Click Convert to JSON and download the file.

From spreadsheet rows to JSON objects

The first row of the sheet is used for the field names and every row below becomes one object, so a price list with the columns name, price and stock turns into [{"name": "...", "price": 9.5, "stock": 12}, ...]. Numbers and true or false values keep their type, dates are written in the standard ISO format, and empty cells are left out.

Text that only looks like a number, such as a postcode with a leading zero, stays a string so no digits are lost. Choosing All sheets gives one object with a key for each sheet name, handy for translation files or settings kept in a workbook.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an Excel file to JSON?

Select the XLSX file, choose the sheet and click Convert to JSON. The first row becomes the field names and each following row becomes one JSON object in an array.

What happens to dates?

Excel stores dates as numbers, which is confusing in JSON. The converter writes them as ISO dates such as 2026-03-15, which every programming language can read.

What if my sheet has no header row?

The first row is always used as the field names. If your data starts on the first row, add a row of column names at the top in Excel before converting, or the first record will be used as names.

Can I convert JSON back to Excel?

Yes, with JSON to Excel. An array of objects becomes a sheet with one column per field, and nested objects are flattened into columns such as address.city.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so customer lists, prices and payroll data are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it works even offline.
