  2. Check what was found: places, paths and a sketch of the route.
  3. Click Convert to GPX and download the file for your GPS or app.

How map drawings become GPS data

GPX is what GPS units and outdoor apps exchange: Garmin, Wahoo, Suunto, Strava, Komoot, OsmAnd, Gaia GPS and Wikiloc all import it. It knows waypoints (single places) and tracks (paths), so each pin of the KML becomes a waypoint with its name and description, and each line becomes a track. Tracks recorded in Google Earth (gx:Track) keep the time of every point, real elevations are kept, and the 0 that My Maps writes after every point is dropped, because it means "on the ground", not sea level.

GPX has no folders, so every point and track carries its folder name as its type, which most apps show or can filter by. A placemark with several shapes (MultiGeometry) is split into its points and segments, and an area (polygon) becomes a closed track along its edge. Descriptions written in HTML by Google Earth become plain text, and the table fields of My Maps are added to the description. Styles, colours and icons have no place in GPX and are left out.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a KML out of Google My Maps?

Open the map, click the three dots next to its name and choose Export to KML/KMZ. Either file works here: a KMZ is unzipped automatically.

How do I put the GPX on my Garmin?

In Garmin Connect, go to Training, Courses and import the GPX, then send it to the device. With a USB cable you can also copy it into the GPX or NewFiles folder of most Garmin units.

Does it keep elevation and times?

Yes, when the KML has them: elevations written in the coordinates and the times of recorded tracks are copied into the GPX. Drawn lines from My Maps have neither, so the GPX has none either; apps such as Komoot or Strava add elevation from their own maps.

Will my line be a track or a route in GPX?

A track, which every GPS app and device accepts and can follow as a course. Most apps can turn it into a route with turn-by-turn directions if you need them.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The files are read and converted by your browser on your own device and never sent to a server.
