AAC to MP3 in 3 steps

  1. Select your AAC files, or drop them on the box.
  2. Choose the MP3 quality and click Convert to MP3.
  3. Download each MP3, or all of them in a ZIP.

AAC or MP3: why convert at all

AAC is the audio format behind Apple Music, YouTube, many radio streams and the recorders of a lot of Android phones. It sounds better than MP3 at the same size, but a raw .aac file is refused by many car stereos, older MP3 players, smart speakers, upload forms and video editors. MP3 plays everywhere.

Both formats are lossy, so a conversion cannot add quality that the AAC did not have. Choose 192 kbps for music and 128 kbps for speech; 320 kbps only makes sense when the AAC itself was encoded at a high bitrate. Songs bought on iTunes with copy protection (old .m4p files) cannot be converted by any honest tool.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert AAC to MP3?

Select your .aac files here, choose the MP3 quality and click Convert to MP3. Each file is decoded by your browser and encoded as MP3 on your device. Download them one by one, or all together in a ZIP when you convert several.

Does my browser support AAC?

Yes, every current browser reads AAC: Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on computers and phones. If a file does not open, it may be damaged or be another format renamed to .aac; the page then tells you which file could not be read.

Will converting AAC to MP3 lose quality?

A little, because the sound is decoded and compressed again. At 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear. Keep the AAC file as your original and use the MP3 only where AAC is not accepted.

What about M4A files?

M4A is AAC audio inside an MP4 container, the format of iPhone voice memos and iTunes songs. This page is for raw .aac files; for .m4a files, use our M4A to MP3 converter, which works the same way.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The audio is decoded and converted inside your browser on your own device, so recordings and music are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded, the converter keeps working even without an internet connection.
