Tracks, routes and waypoints in Google Earth
A GPX file can hold three kinds of things: waypoints (marked places), routes (planned lines to follow) and tracks (where you really went, point by point, usually with time and elevation). In the KML each kind goes into its own folder, Waypoints, Routes and Tracks, so you can switch them on and off in Google Earth. Tracks are drawn as a bold orange line that follows the terrain and routes in blue; a track that was paused and resumed stays one item, with its gaps.
Names, descriptions and comments become the text of each balloon, waypoint times become timestamps and every track gets its start and end time, so the time slider of Google Earth can replay it. Elevations stay in the coordinates and Garmin track colours are kept. Heart rate, cadence and power from Strava or Garmin extensions are not part of KML and are left out. Google My Maps imports the KML as a layer; very long activities may be simplified there.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a GPX file in Google Earth?
Google Earth Pro on a computer opens GPX directly (File, Open), but Google Earth on the web and Google My Maps need KML. Convert the file here, then in Google Earth on the web open Projects, New project, Import KML file.
How do I import it into Google My Maps?
Create a map, click Import under the first layer and choose the KML. Each file becomes one layer with its waypoints and lines.
Can I convert a Strava or Komoot activity?
Yes. Export it as GPX first: in Strava open the activity, click the three dots and choose Export GPX; in Komoot open the tour and use Download GPX. Then convert that file here.
Are heart rate, cadence and power kept?
No. KML has no place for sensor data, so only the route, the times and the elevations are kept. Keep the original GPX if you need those figures.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The files are read and converted by your browser on your own device and never sent to a server.
