The tallest post that is not cropped by the app

Instagram accepts feed photos from 1.91:1 landscape up to 4:5 portrait. A typical phone photo is 3:4, slightly taller than 4:5, and a full-screen 9:16 shot is much taller, so the app trims them when you post and you lose the top or bottom. Resizing to 1080 × 1350 yourself means you choose: Fill and crop trims evenly at the centre, and Crop Image lets you pick the exact area first.

A 3:4 photo loses very little on the way to 4:5, about 6 per cent of its height, so for most portraits the centred crop looks right without any adjustment.

Landscape photos in a portrait post

Turning a wide landscape into 4:5 with Fill and crop cuts away a lot of the sides. To keep the whole view, choose Fit the whole picture: the photo sits in the middle of a 1080 × 1350 frame with white bars above and below. Some people like that framed look for a consistent grid; others prefer to post landscapes as they are.

Good to know

Each file keeps its format and the JPG is saved at high quality. The profile grid shows posts in a taller tile than it used to, so a 4:5 image also tends to show more of itself on your profile than a square.

Up to 20 photos can be resized together, which is handy for a carousel where every slide needs the same shape.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1080 × 1350 size for?

It is the 4:5 portrait post on Instagram, the tallest shape the feed shows without cropping.

Will my phone photo be cut?

Slightly. A 3:4 photo loses a thin strip at the top and bottom. Choose Fit the whole picture to keep everything.

Does the photo get blurry?

No, unless the original is smaller than 1080 px wide. Phone photos are much bigger, so they are only scaled down.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
