How MP3 compression works
The size of an MP3 depends on its bitrate: how many kilobits it uses for each second of sound. Music is often saved at 256 or 320 kbps, about 2 to 2.4 MB per minute. Lowering the bitrate makes the file proportionally smaller, so a 320 kbps song compressed to 96 kbps takes less than a third of the space.
Speech needs far less than music. Podcasts, lessons and voice recordings stay perfectly clear at 64 or 96 kbps, while music keeps sounding good at 128 kbps. If your MP3 already uses a low bitrate, compressing it further will not make it much smaller.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my MP3 get?
It depends on the original bitrate. A 320 kbps file shrinks to about 40% of its size at 128 kbps, 30% at 96 kbps and 20% at 64 kbps. One minute takes about 1 MB at 128 kbps and 0.5 MB at 64 kbps.
Which setting should I choose for a voice recording?
Choose 64 kbps for voice memos, interviews and calls, which stay clear and very small. Use 96 kbps for podcasts and lessons with some music, and 128 kbps if the recording is mostly music.
Can I compress an MP3 without losing quality?
Every reduction in bitrate removes some sound detail. At 128 kbps music still sounds good on phones and normal headphones, and speech is unaffected at 64 or 96 kbps. Keep the original if you might need the full quality later.
How do I make an MP3 small enough for email?
Most email services accept attachments of about 20 to 25 MB. At 64 kbps that fits around 45 minutes of audio, and at 128 kbps around 20 minutes. Compress the file here, then attach the smaller MP3.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The compression runs inside your browser on your own device, so your audio is never sent to us or stored anywhere.
