How to get a WhatsApp voice message out of the chat
WhatsApp keeps voice notes as Opus audio files (.opus, sometimes .ogg). On Android, press and hold the voice message, tap Share and choose Files or Save to device, or open the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder with a file manager (it is inside Android › media › com.whatsapp). On an iPhone, press and hold the message, tap Forward, then the share button, and choose Save to Files. In WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, open the menu of the message and choose Download. Then open this page in the phone or computer browser and select the file: several voice notes can be transcribed at once.
WhatsApp has its own transcripts in some languages, but not on every phone or in every language, and they only show inside the chat. Here you get the whole text to copy into a reply, a to-do list, an email or a translator, with punctuation and paragraphs, and you can keep it as a TXT file. The voice note is transcribed by a speech model that runs in your browser, so the private message is never uploaded anywhere. The first time the page downloads the model (about 80 MB, better on Wi-Fi); later voice notes start immediately.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a WhatsApp audio to text?
Share the voice note from WhatsApp as a file (press and hold it, then Share or Forward and Save to Files), open this page and select the .opus file. Click Transcribe and the text appears after a few seconds, ready to copy or download.
Why is WhatsApp transcription not available in my language?
WhatsApp only transcribes some languages, and only on recent versions and phones. This tool works with more than 40 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, German, Turkish, Indonesian and Italian, on any phone or computer with an up-to-date browser.
Can I transcribe a voice message on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in Chrome or Safari on your phone, tap Select, and pick the voice note from Files or Downloads. Phones are slower than computers: a two-minute voice note takes about a minute. Keep the screen on while it works.
Does it work with Telegram and other voice notes?
Yes. Telegram, Signal and most messaging apps also save voice notes as Opus or OGG files, and iPhone Voice Memos are M4A: all of them can be transcribed here, along with MP3, WAV and the sound of videos.
Does anyone else hear my voice messages?
No. The voice note is transcribed inside your browser, on your own device. It is never sent to us or to any other service, and nothing is stored. Only the speech model is downloaded from this site the first time.
