MSG to PDF in 3 steps

  1. Select one or more .msg files saved from Outlook, or drop them on the box.
  2. Choose one PDF per email or all in one PDF, and whether picture attachments are added.
  3. Click Convert to PDF and download the PDF, or a ZIP for several emails.

Outlook messages without Outlook

A .msg file is how Outlook for Windows saves a single message, for example when you drag an email to a folder or someone sends you one as an attachment. Inside is a small compound file with one entry per property: subject, sender, each recipient with their address, the sent time, the body and every attachment. Outlook often keeps the body only as compressed RTF, sometimes with the original HTML wrapped inside. The converter unpacks it, recovers the HTML when it is there and otherwise uses the formatted RTF or the plain text, so the PDF reads like the message did in Outlook.

The PDF opens with a header block (From, To, Cc, the sent date and the attachments with their sizes) followed by the message as real, searchable text, with its tables, colours, links and the pictures pasted into it. Picture attachments can be added after the message, and Outlook items attached to the email, such as forwarded messages, are printed after it. Messages saved in a regional code page, like Japanese Shift_JIS or Cyrillic Windows-1251, are read with the right encoding.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a MSG file without Outlook?

Convert it here: the PDF opens on any phone, Mac or PC and shows the whole message with its header. You do not need Outlook, an account or an add-on, and the file never leaves your device.

How do I save an Outlook email as a MSG file?

In classic Outlook for Windows, drag the message from the list to your desktop or a folder, or use File, Save As and pick Outlook Message Format - Unicode. The new Outlook and Outlook on the web save emails as .eml files instead; convert those with EML to PDF.

Can I convert many MSG files at once?

Yes. Select them all and you get a ZIP with one PDF per email. Choose All in one PDF to put every message in a single document, in date order and each starting on a new page, which is handy for sending an email trail to a lawyer or an accountant.

What happens to the attachments?

They are listed under the header with their names and sizes. Picture attachments can be added to the PDF after the message, and attached Outlook messages are printed after it. Documents such as PDF or Excel files are not copied into the PDF.

Will the PDF look exactly like in Outlook?

Very close: text styles, colours, tables, lists, links and pictures in the body are kept. Side-by-side columns and background images of marketing emails become a single column, and pictures the email would load from the internet are not downloaded, for your privacy.

Is my Outlook email uploaded anywhere?

No. The .msg file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so company emails, contracts and personal messages are never sent to us or stored anywhere. After the page has loaded it even works offline.
