PDF Booklet Maker in 3 steps

  1. Select the PDF, or drop it on the box.
  2. Choose the paper and the side the booklet opens from.
  3. Click Make booklet, then print it double-sided with "Flip on short edge", fold and staple.

Why booklet pages print out of order, and how this fixes it

A folded booklet is made of sheets with two pages on each side, nested inside each other. On an 8-page booklet the first sheet carries pages 8 and 1 on the outside and 2 and 7 on the inside, the second sheet 6 and 3, then 4 and 5. Printing a PDF normally puts the pages in the wrong places; this tool does the reordering (printers call it saddle-stitch imposition) and places two pages on each landscape sheet. If the page count is not a multiple of 4, blank pages are added at the end, where they are least in the way.

Print the result double-sided and choose "Flip on short edge" (sometimes called short-edge binding or tumble), otherwise every second side comes out upside down. Then keep the sheets in order, fold the stack in half and staple along the fold. With Same as the pages, an A4 document becomes an A5 booklet printed on A4 paper; choose A3 to keep the pages at full A4 size. For right-to-left books, manga and Japanese vertical text, set the binding on the right. Pages stay vector, so the text is as sharp as in the original.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print a PDF as a booklet?

Make the booklet here, open the downloaded PDF and print it double-sided with "Flip on short edge". Keep the printed sheets in order, fold the stack in half and staple it along the fold.

Why are some pages upside down when I print my booklet?

The printer flipped the paper on the long edge. In the print dialog choose double-sided with "Flip on short edge" (also called short-edge binding). On printers without double-sided printing, print the odd sheets, put the stack back in the tray and print the even ones.

Why does my booklet have blank pages?

Every sheet holds four pages, two on each side, so a booklet always has a multiple of 4 pages. When the PDF has, say, 10 pages, two blank pages are added at the end to make 12.

How many pages can a stapled booklet have?

Up to about 60 to 80 pages (15 to 20 sheets of normal paper) folds and staples well. Thicker documents are better split into several booklets, for example with Split PDF before making each one.

What paper size should I choose?

Same as the pages is right in most cases: an A4 PDF prints as an A5 booklet on A4 paper, and a Letter PDF as a half-letter booklet on Letter paper. Choose A3 or Double page size when you want the booklet pages at their original size.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Making the booklet happens in your browser, on your own device. The file is never sent anywhere, so it also works with confidential documents and keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
