RTF to DOCX in 3 steps

  1. Select your RTF files, or drop them on the box.
  2. Click Convert to DOCX.
  3. Download the Word file and keep editing it.

From rich text to a real Word file

RTF is handy for moving text between programs, but it is a dated format: files are large, pictures make them huge, and some upload forms only accept .docx. The converter reads the RTF file and writes a real Word document with paragraphs and heading styles, fonts, sizes and colours, alignment, indents and spacing, bulleted and numbered lists, tables with merged cells, PNG and JPEG pictures, links, page size, margins and headers and footers.

Old Windows metafile pictures (WMF, EMF), drawing shapes and embedded objects are left out, and footnotes become numbered notes at the end of the document. The DOCX is usually much smaller than the RTF, especially when the document has pictures.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert RTF to DOCX?

DOCX is the format Word, Google Docs and most online forms expect today. It is also far smaller: an RTF stores pictures as text, which can make a file ten times bigger than the same document saved as DOCX.

Can I edit the result in Word?

Yes. It is a normal Word document with real paragraphs, heading styles, lists and tables. It opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice, ready to be edited and saved again.

Are pictures in the RTF kept?

PNG and JPEG pictures are kept at their size in the document. Pictures stored only as old Windows metafiles (WMF or EMF), which some older programs use, cannot be read in the browser and are left out.

Can I convert several RTF files at once?

Yes. Select up to 20 files and each becomes its own DOCX. When there is more than one, you can also download them all together in a single ZIP file.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so contracts, CVs, reports and letters are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
