Trimming without re-encoding
Most of the time you only need to drop the fumbling at the start of a recording or the seconds after the moment ended. In Fast mode the tool copies the original video and sound for the part you keep, without re-encoding anything, so the clip is ready in seconds, keeps exactly the same quality and stays in its format: MP4 stays MP4, MOV stays MOV, WebM stays WebM.
Videos can only be cut cleanly at key frames, which usually come every one to five seconds, so in Fast mode the clip may start slightly before the point you chose. If you need it to start on the exact frame, choose Exact frame: the video is then re-encoded at high quality, which takes longer, about as long as the part you keep.
Frequently asked questions
How do I trim a video for free?
Select the video, drag the two handles to where the clip should start and end, press play to check and click Trim video. The shorter video downloads in the same format, with no watermark and no sign-up.
Does trimming reduce the video quality?
Not in Fast mode: the part you keep is copied as it is, without re-encoding, and the page confirms it. Exact frame re-encodes the video at a high bitrate, which is very hard to tell apart from the original.
Why does my clip start a little earlier than I chose?
In Fast mode the cut has to start on a key frame, a complete picture that the following frames are built on. Key frames usually come every one to five seconds. Choose Exact frame if the clip has to start exactly where you placed the handle.
Can I trim a video on my phone?
Yes. The handles are big enough to drag with a finger, the plus and minus buttons move them a tenth of a second, and the preview shows the frame where each handle sits. The trimmed video is saved to your downloads.
Which browsers can do this?
Fast mode only needs a recent browser. Exact frame uses the video encoder built into it. Chrome and Edge on a computer or Android phone work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, but they are slower with large videos. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is processed by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. That also means there is no upload to wait for, which saves a lot of time with large videos.
