Moving contacts from Google or Outlook to an iPhone
iPhone cannot import a CSV, but it imports a VCF. Google Contacts and Outlook exports use fixed column names (Phone 1 - Value, Mobile Phone, Business Street…) that the converter knows, including the label Google gives each number and its habit of putting two numbers in one cell separated by :::. Every number keeps its type, so a mobile stays a mobile and a work fax stays a fax.
CSV files come in many flavours. Commas, semicolons and tabs are detected on their own, and files saved by Excel in Windows-1252 or Shift_JIS (common for Japanese address books) are decoded correctly instead of turning accents and kanji into question marks. Rows without a name, phone number or email are left out.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Google Contacts CSV to VCF?
Export your contacts at contacts.google.com as Google CSV, select the file here and click Convert to VCF. Labels such as Mobile, Work and Home, birthdays, notes and groups are carried over to the vCard, and the import on your iPhone keeps them.
Does it work with an Outlook CSV export?
Yes. Outlook columns such as First Name, Mobile Phone, Business Phone, Home Street and E-mail Address are recognised, while columns like E-mail Display Name or Assistant's Name are left out so they do not end up mixed into the contact's own name.
My CSV opens with strange characters like é or ?. Will the VCF be right?
Usually yes. The converter checks whether the file is UTF-8, UTF-16 or an older code page and decodes it accordingly, so names like José, Müller or 鈴木 come out right. The VCF itself is always written in UTF-8.
What if a column is not recognised?
Every column has a selector under Columns. Choose what it holds, or Don't import to leave it out. The number of contacts updates straight away, before anything is converted, so you can see the effect of each change.
Are my contacts uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and converted by your browser on your own device, so names, numbers and addresses are never sent to a server or stored anywhere. That matters when the list holds other people's personal data.
